The Davison County Sheriff said that after hearing strong resistance from the public, he is dropping support for a proposal to build the state men's penitentiary in Mitchell.

A task force looking at building a new men’s prison is abandoning a contentious location in Lincoln County that the state already owns. It’s unclear what the state-owned site will become.

The state Department of Public Safety is warning residents about a scam text message campaign. In this latest scam, the text falsely claims the recipient owes traffic ticket fines and faces legal action if they don’t pay immediately.
